WRFG Route 66 Playlist and Podcast July 16, 2023

WRFG’s Route 66 celebrates a time when blues, jazz, and R&B blended
together, often in the same song. The focus is on the the Jump Blues and
Early Rock’n’Roll Eras (1940s to mid-1950s) and on how those styles
and artists have evolved over the years.

Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 A.M. Eastern (U.S.) on Atlanta’s

8:00 A.M. – CHAMPION JACK DUPREE
William Thomas “Jack” Dupree was born in the Irish Channel neighborhood of
New Orleans probably on July 4, 1919. Orphaned at the age of 8, Dupree learned
to play piano during his stay at the Colored Waifs Home in New Orleans.
Dupree gained his nickmade “Champion” from his early career as a boxer during
which he won the Golden Gloves. He moved to Chicago in 1930 launched his six
decade career as boggie-woogie pianist and singer. Our tribute includes several
of Dupree’s best known songs along with the original versions of two songs from
his repetory and one memorable cover.
