WRFG’s Route 66 celebrates a time when blues, jazz, and R&B blended
together, often in the same song. The focus is on the the Jump Blues and
Early Rock’n’Roll Eras (1940s to mid-1950s) and on how those styles
and artists have evolved over the years.

Today’s featured artist is Jimmy Liggins. Born James L. Elliott in Earlboro, Oklahoma
on October 14, 1918, Liggins was an R&B guitarist and bandleader, and the brother
of the more commercially successful R&G/blues pianist, Joe Liggins.
Jimmy Liggins’s wild stage presence and delivery influenced several 1950s
performers including Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Bill Haley.
One of his early releases, “Cadillac Boogie” was a direct forerunner of “Rocket 88”,
itself often called the first rock and roll record. – wikipedia
In addition to Jimmy Liggins, we also spotlight Illinois Jacquet, the jazz tenor saxophonest best remembered for his solo on “Flying Home,” critically recognized
as the first R&B saxophone solo. The artist was born Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet
in Broussard, Louisiana on October 30, 1922. – wikipedia
