Bandleader, singer, songwriter, record producer, talent scout disc jockey,
Congressional aide, unsuccessful Congressional candidate, resterant owner,
and minister Johnny Otis was born Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes in Vallejo,
California on December 28, 1928.
R&B and blues singer “Little” Esther Phillips was born Esther Mae Phillips
in Galveston, Texas on December, 23, 1935. Otis discovered Phillips when
she sang in a talent show when she was just 13-years-old. Together, they
had six national Top 10 R&B hits in 1950.
