blues pianist, keyboardist, singer, and songwriter who first rose to prominence with
the Ink Spots and later became an Atlanta blues institution, performing
weekly well into his 90s.

James “Jimmy” Witherspoon was born in Gurdon, Arkansas, on August 8, 1920.
Often considered the consummate jump blues singer, Witherspoon first gained notice
as a big band singer on Armed Forces Radio during World War II.

August 7, 1935, A musical genius and jazz original who could play tenor, flute,
