Count Basie is our featured artist this week. Born William James Basie in Red Bank,
New Jersey, on August 21, 1904, Basie was a jazz pianist, organist, bandleader and composer. In 1935, he formed the Count Basie Orchestra and made his first recording
in Chicago the following year. Basie led the group for almost 50 years.
(NOTE: This is the 120th anniversary of Basie’s birth, not 110 as the pin monkey
who does this show said on the air and on the podcast. Management promises he
will get a good talking to and lose his allowance for a week.)
