Today’s featured artist is Jimmy Liggins. Born James L. Elliott in Earlboro, Oklahoma
on October 14, 1918, Liggins was an R&B guitarist and bandleader, and the brother
of the more commercially successful R&G/blues pianist, Joe Liggins.
Jimmy Liggins’s wild stage presence and delivery influenced several 1950s
performers including Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Bill Haley.
One of his early releases, “Cadillac Boogie” was a direct forerunner of “Rocket 88”,
itself often called the first rock and roll record.
