Our featured artist is Johnny Moore. Moore was an R&B guitarist and vocalist who is
best known as the founder of Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers with Charles Brown
and Eddie Williams. Born John Dudley Moore in Austin, Texas on October 20 1906,
Moore is credited with composing “Merry Christmas Baby” and “Drifting Blues”
(although, this has been disputed by Charles Brown, who claimed to be the composer).
A shrewd businessman, Moore would never sign a long-term contract with any
record label, instead choosing to bargain independently for every release. As
a result, Moore’s group would often have multiple songs on national and regional
R&B charts at any given time time.
His brother, Oscar Moore, was the guitarist for the (Nat) King Cole Trio.
