TRIBUTE TO TINY GRIMES
Born Lloyd “Tiny” Grimes in Newport News, Virginia on June 7, 1946
Loch Lomond Tiny “Mac” Grimes & the Rocking Highlanders
Gotham Records 1947
A consummate jazz and blues guitarist and vocalist, Grimes hit his commercial
peak with the Rocking Highlanders in the late 1940s through mid-1950s.
The band was on the bill for Alan Freed’s Rock & Roll Coronation Ball in Cleveland,
Ohio in 1952, but authorities shut down the show before they reached the stage.
Most music historians concider the Coronation Ball is considered both the first
rock & roll concert and the first rock & roll riot.
I Miss You So The Cats & The Fiddle Bluebird Records 1941
Grimes’s first hit, he had been playing guitar for just 18 months
when he joined The Cats in early 1941.
I Ain’t Got Nobody The Art Tatum Trio Brunswick Records 1944
Grimes said he left The Cats & The Fiddle because their music was not
challenging enough and the pay was not high enough. He joined the
Art Tatum Trio and recorded several sides with them before going solo near
the end of World War II.
Tiny’s Tempo The Tiny Grimes Quintet w/ Charlie Parker Savoy Records 1944
Romance Without Finance Tiny Grimes Quintet w/ Charlie Parker Savoy Records 1946
Grimes recorded four sides with Charlie Parker for the Savoy Records
between 1944 and 1946.

Detour Ahead Billie Holiday w/ the Tiny Grimes Sextet Aladdin Records 1951
Grimes and his Sextet backed Holiday on several recording dates from the
mid-1940s to the early 1950s.

Still King Illinois Jacquet, Tiny Grimes, & Wynton Kelly The Blues; That’s Me! 1969
Grimes continued to record until the late 1970s.
He died in New York City in March of 1989.

Push-Ka-Pee She Pie (The Saga Of Saga Boy)
Louis Jordan & The Tympany Five
Decca Records 1950

While never a national hit, “Push-Ka-Pee She Pie (The Saga Of Saga Boy)”
certainly got a lot of play on juke boxes in Harlem. It made the Cash Box
regional R&B Chart for New York for four weeks in March and April of 1950,
peaking at number two. It also made it to number nine in Los Angeles

for one week, and spent two weeks in 10th place in Chicago.
The tune was written by Jordan, Caribbean musician Joe Willoughby,
and Dr. Walter Merrick. In addition to being a composer and pianist,
Merrick was head of Physical Medicine Department at Harlem Hospital.

FEATURE: WHAT THE HECK WAS HADACOL?

Hadacol Bounce Ben Levin Carryout Or Delivery 2020
Ben Levin’s new album “Carry Out or Delivery” features a fresh version of
“Hadacol Bounce.” The song was written and recorded by country singer
Bill Nettles in 1950 and redone New Orleans-style by Roy Byrd and His
Blues Jumpers (a.k.a. Professor Longhair).

Hadacol was a patent medicine that from the mid-1940s to the early 1950s
was marketed as a vitamin supplement that was good for the whole family.
In reality, Hadacol’s principal attraction was that it contained 12% alcohol, supposedly as a preservative.

While the recommended dosage was one tablespoonful taken four times a

day in a half glass of water after meals and at bedtime, some pharmacies
in dry counties in the American south were know to sell Hadacol by the shot
and in one county outside Chicago you could only buy it in a liquor store.

And like any good intoxicant, Hadacol became the stuff of song and story.

TRIBUTE TO JAMES HARMAN (June 8, 1946 – May 23, 2021)
Iconic blues harmonica player, singer, and songwriter James Harman had been under treatment for cancer for several months before his heart finally gave out.

Harman was born in Anniston, Alabama on June 8, 1946. He started taking piano lessons at age four and began playing harmonicas owned by his father after finding them stashed in the piano bench. By the early 1960s, Harmon was playing in blues and R&B bands around Panama City and cut his first singles

in Atlanta in 1964.

In 1977, he formed the James Harman Band. The band served as an incubator for some major talent, including Phil Alvin and Bill Bateman (The Blaster), King Ramos and Gene Taylor (Fabulous Thunderbirds), Hollywood Fats, and Junior Watson.
