If you’re a record collector, I bet you’ve gone crate diving. If you haven’t, crate divers dig through the dusty bins at record stores and flea markets in search of hidden treasure. Because of the pandemic, I’m at home more than usual and I’m using some of the time to build up the Route 66 music library. All the songs today are new to the show. Most are from the Cash Box and Billboard R&B Charts, the rest are gems I unearthed while digging through the digital crates. Enjoy!

“Fat” Waller was born Thomas Wright Waller in New York, New York on May 21, 1904.
At age 6, he started taking piano lessons from his mother, Adeline Locket Waller, then graduated to playing organ in the church where his father, the Reverend Edward Martin, was the pastor. At 15, he dropped out of DeWitt Clinton High School and became the organist at the Lincoln Theater in Harlem. The theater paid him $32.00 a week. That’s more than $470.00 a week today.

Fats Waller wrote or co-wrote about 400 songs and recorded scores of songs by other artists. He also wrote for Broadway and performed in movies, but for today’s exercise the focus is on his work that helped lay the groundwork for jump blues, early rock’n’roll, and modern jazz piano.

According to “Reefer Madness: A History of Marijuana” by Larry Sloman, Waller’s version was a little jab at Harry J. Anslinger, the first head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics.

Walker was born Aaron Thibeaux Walker in Linden, Texas on May 28, 1910. His parents were both musicians and his step-father Marco Washington taught him to play several instruments inclding piano and guitar. Often performing with Blind Lemmon Jefferson under the name Oak Cliff T-Bone, Walker started his career in Dallas in the 1920s. Wichita Falls Blues was his first record.

Billy Wright first sang gospel in the church, then made a name for himself as a dancer and female impersonator. He developed as a singer while performing at the 81 Theater, a black vaudeville house at 81 Decatur Street SE. The theater was torn down in the 1960s and replaced by an office building near the present day library at Georgia State. Wright’s recording career began in 1949 when, as the vocalist for the Howard Collander Orchestra, he hit number three on the Billboard R&B chart “Blues for My Baby.”

Billy Wright was a major influence on Little Richard and, with the help of DJ and talent scout Zenas Sears, got him his first recording date at the old WGST studio at Georgia state in 1951. Little Richard recorded “Every Hour” and “Taxi Blues” at that session. “Every Hour” went on to be a bit jukebox hit in Atlanta, but nowhere else.

For the rest of his career, he was a local performer and MC here in Atlanta He died in 1991 just before his Halloween Show at the Royal Peacock. Billy Wright’s time in the national spotlight wasn’t long,
but he burned brightly.
