Our featured artist is Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson. Born Edward L. Vinson, Junior in Houston, Texas on December 18, 1917, Vinson was a master saxophonist, vocalist,
and composer. Vinson first gained widespread attention as the singer for Cootie
Williams and his orchestra, where he scored his first hit with “(Cherry) Red Blues.”

Vinson soon went out on his own and in 1947 had a double-sided hit with “Old Maid Boogie” and “Kidney Stew Blues.” “Kidney Stew” became his signature song.

As Vinson developed as an artist, he drew more and more away from jump and R&B
and into the world of jazz both as composer and performer, often going toe-to-toe
with some of the biggest names in the business.

Ruth Brown is this week’s featured artist. Born Ruth Weston in Portsmouth, Virginia
on January 12, 1928) was an American singer-songwriter and actress, sometimes referred to as the “Queen of R&B”. She was noted for bringing a pop music style to
R&B music in a series of hit songs for Atlantic Records in the 1950s. For these contributions, Atlantic became known as “the house that Ruth built”(alluding to
the popular nickname for the old Yankee Stadium). Brown was a 1993 inductee
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Buddy Johnson is today’s featured artist. Born Woodrow Wilson Johnson in Darlington, South Carolina on January 10, 1915, Johnson, a classically trained pianist, led one of the most successful bands of the jump blues era. After the band with which he was touring was expelled from NAZI Germany, Johonson signed with Decca Records and made his first records in 1929. He struck it big with “Let’s Beat Out Some Love,” Johnson’s first national R&B hit in 1943.

Together with his sister, Ella, Johnson scored 14 national R&B hits between 1943 and 1957 and wrote several songs that have become jazz standards including
“Since I Fell for You” and “Fine Brown Frame.”

was a singer and a band leader who scored numerous hit records in the
1930s and 1940s. Calloway was a regular performer at the Cotton Club
in Harlem, where he became a popular vocalist of the swing era.
His niche of mixing jazz and vaudeville won him acclaim during a

IN THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS PLAY – Rev. Jim Rigsby
In this year’s Christmas play, the role of Herod will once again be played by

every political leader who bashes immigrants, mocks the poor or hounds women
having difficult pregnancies.

In this year’s Christmas play, the shepherds will be played by workers without

unions or sick leave, and by construction workers who labor in dangerous
conditions. The hotel owner will be played by those willing to stop making money
long enough to help someone in need. Joseph will be played by all those who don’t
need to personally benefit in order to help others. The 3 Wise Ones will be played
by those willing to leave old religious and political certainties and follow
wherever truth might lead.

This year, as every year, the Christ Child will be played by children born

into dangerous struggle between powerful religious and political forces.
These tender souls will be born shivering in the dark- invisible to the world.
Every precious infant born in harm’s way will be of infinite value, worth more
than all the treasures of the world.

The role of Mary will be played by all those radical lovers of humankind
who keep the torch of hope for universal justice burning. Like Mary, they will
sing of a day when those who dominate others will be brought down and the
oppressed will be lifted up in a revolution of loving justice.

The role of the angels, as always, will be played by those who can hover

above religious sects, national boundaries and hierarchies of vested wealth
and power to sing a song of peace on earth and good will to ALL.

READING: THE WORK OF CHRISTMAS – Howard Thurman
When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,

To bring peace among sisters and brothers,
To make music in the heart.

Our featured artist is Big Mama Thornton. Born Willie Mae Thornton in Ariton, Alabama, on December 11, 1926, Thornton was a singer, harmonica player, and
songwriter. A self-taught musician, Thornton was heavily influenced by
Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie.

At 14 she sang Louis Jordan’s “G.I. Jive” and Big Maceo’s
“Worried Life Blues” for her successful audition for Sammy Green’s Hot Harlem Revue.

Thornton toured with the revue for more than a decade. In 1950 she launched her solo career, moved to Houston, and signed a five year contract with Peacock Records.

Her first recording for Peacock, “Let Your Tears Fall Baby,”
became a local hit in Houston.

Although Thornton’s career spanned more than 40 years, she is best remembered

for a song she recorded in Los Angeles on August 13, 1952. Shortly after
Johnny Otis introduced Thornton to the fledging songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and
Mike Stoller, she was booked for a session to record a song they had written for her.

The song was “Hound Dog” and it secured Big Mama Thornton’s place
in the history of popular American music.
