Born Elenora Fagan in Philadelphia on April 7, 1915, Billie Holiday was an American jazz and swing music singer. Nicknamed “Lady Day” by her friend and music partner, Lester Young, Holiday had an innovative influence on jazz music and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. She was known for her vocal delivery and improvisational skills.Wikipedia

Sister Rosetta Tharpe rose to prominance as a singer for Lucky Millinder and His Orchestra scoring what is considered the first “pop gospel” hit with “Rock Me” in 1938. A powerful singer and guitar player, Tharpe is often referred to as the “grandmother” of Rock & Roll.

Hollywood Fats was a guitar virtuoso. He was one of only a few West Coast blues musicians of his generation who incorporated jump blues into his sound.

Born Nathaniel Adams Cole in Montgomery Alabama on March 17, 1919
Considered one of the greatest pop singers of the mid-20th century, Nat King Cole had more than 100 songs reach the pop charts. His King Cole Trio was the template for jazz and blues trios for year to come. Cole was a master jazz pianist who recorded with many of the jazz greats of the 1940s including Lester Young and performed frequently with Norman Grant’s Jazz At The Philharmonic.
